Murray points D.A. in right direction

D.A. Points captured his maiden PGA Tour Title at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am after firing a final-round 67 to win by two shots over Hunter Mahan.

Points, who trailed overnight leader Steve Marino for much of the round, took control of the tournament with one of the shots of the season when holing out from 99 yards for eagle on the par 5 14th.

The 34-year-old from Illinois wrapped up victory when curling in a 28 foot birdie putt at the next and three closing pars to finish at 15 under par.

American Ryder Cup player Mahan shot the best final round of the day, 66, but rued a costly three-putt at the par 5 last.

Marino, who led by a shot before Points made eagle on 14, could not find the birdie putts when they mattered and eventually finished tied fourth after a disastrous treble bogey on the 18th hole.

But it was double delight for Points in the Pebble Beach sunshine as he teamed up with comedian Bill Murray to take the spoils in the team Pro-Am competition - Murray's first taste of victory since he started playing in this format 20 years ago.

The actor famous for his role in the great golfing movie 'Caddyshack' met Points for the first time on Tuesday evening and told him he wanted to have fun but also go out there and win.

"Those two things usually go together," Murray commented.

"I thought, that's about as solid an endorsement of where we are going this week as I could have gotten. I felt like, this is cool, this could really happen. And it did."

Points embraced the opportunity to play with his idol for the first time and clearly enjoyed the antics of a person who was once described as too outrageous for the game.

Murray was able to relax his man on the back nine by offering him a selection of ice creams on the tee box, high-fiving the crowds down the fairway and wearing an unsightly red Elmer Fudd hat when playing shots.

"When I'm more chatty and more outgoing, it helps me," said Points.

"You look at Rocco Mediate and Peter Jacobsen and other guys that I look up to, even Mr. Palmer, he had his army. When he was in that mode, everybody spurred him onto play better."

Murray, who sipped a glass of red wine during the post-tournament interview, added: "I think most people playing in a tournament, or any enterprise get too nervous."

"Staying loose is the most important thing you can do, I mean, the best people in any profession, the whole thing is about being as relaxed as you can."

Points pocketed $1.134 million to race his way into second on the FedExCup standings behind two-time season winner Mark Wilson.

"It will take me a really long time to truly grasp what I was able to accomplish with Bill this week," Points said.

"To win on the PGA TOUR, and especially at Pebble Beach with Bill Murray, gosh, I mean, I don't think I could even dream it up. I don't think I could even dream it that well."
